The primary role of a UPS is to provide power when mains power drops out. UPS's can also correct common power problems by providing Surge Protection - to combat Voltage spikes or power surges, Voltage Regulation - to combat sustained overvoltage or undervoltage, Noise Reduction - to combat high frequency transient or oscillation, injected into the line by nearby equipment, Frequency Regulation - to combat the instability of the mains frequency and Harmonic distortion correction - to combat the departure from the ideal sinusoidal waveform expected on mains as well as battery backup.
There are three UPS design modes available - Standby, Line Interactive and Online. A Standby UPS will charge its battery; when mains power drops off, the Standby UPS mechanically switches to the battery backup. It is the least expensive UPS. A Line-Interactive UPS includes a transformer that assists with voltage regulation. This makes these UPS's better at handling brownouts and power fluctuations. An Online UPS completely isolates the electronic devices attached to it from mains and, as it requires significant extra circuitry to do this, is the most expensive type of UPS. The Online UPS therefore runs completely off the battery (which is being perpetually topped up by mains).
The wattage rating of a UPS is usually 0.6 of its VA rating this is assuming a power factor of 0.6. To select the size of UPS you need, add up the (running and starting) power consumption of everything attached to your UPS. Include a factor of 2 to power consumption to double the time that the UPS will provide battery backup.
