A network controller server is a piece of computer hardware that separates the Local Area Network (LAN) from the internet (Wide Area Network or WAN).
Network Controllers usually have a linux based operating systems with at least two network ports. This allows the home or business local network to be protected from intrusion or hacking.
One ethernet port is configured and connected directly to the modem. The other ethernet port is configured and connected to a wired/wireless router that connects all devices on the local network. Hence the local network has access to but is isolated and protected from the internet.
Linux is a very robust, reliable, secure and resources light operating system so server hardware can be anything from second hand desktops or new specialised server hardware.
